CALME luminary Warren Christopher Calls for U.S. Involvement in Stemming the Violence

Reflecting on his experiences as Secretary of State at a time when Israel was being shelled by Hezbollah’s rockets, Warren Christopher said in his July 28 Washington Post op-ed “A Time To Act” that an immediate cease-fire is the most important element of stemming the violence, with negotiations on a longer-term settlement following immediately. He then says, “If a cease-fire is the goal, the United States has an indispensable role to play… Israel plainly trusts no one else to negotiate on its behalf and will accept no settlement in which we are not deeply involved.” Secretary Christopher concludes, “It is time for the United States to step forward with the authority and balance that this moment requires.”
